GRAPHING GUIDE

Start with the graph

Write the equation as y = mx + b when possible. The number m is the slope, and b gives the y-intercept (0, b).

Worked example

For y = −2x + 3, start at (0, 3). Move right one unit and down two units to reach (1, 1). Draw the line through both points.

Try another example

To graph 2x + 3y = 12, isolate y to get y = 4 − (2/3)x. The line passes through (0, 4) and (6, 0).

Check your result

A vertical line such as x = 3 cannot be written as y = mx + b. Draw it through all points with x-coordinate 3.
